2020 Ceremony Information & Updates
February 11, 2021
Dear Class of 2020,
Save the date! We are pleased to announce that Sonoma State University will continue our celebration of the graduates of the Class of 2020 with a hybrid drive-thru and virtual commencement ceremony on campus the weekend of May 15-16, 2021.
After careful consideration of current public health guidance, the Commencement Logistics Committee thinks the best format for this important celebration is a hybrid drive-thru ceremony. While current Sonoma County public health data indicates that large in-person gatherings such as commencement will not yet be feasible by May, a hybrid drive-thru format provides more of a community feel than a solely virtual format.
Despite the continued challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, SSU has been steadfast in our commitment to honor our 2020 graduates with a commencement ceremony that is both festive and safe. We aim to make this event a meaningful memory for you, your family, and friends since we could not hold ceremonies in May of last year.
Each graduate will have the option to attend in person in a vehicle accompanied by family and friends. Graduates participating in the drive-thru ceremony will have the opportunity to exit their car to walk across the stage wearing regalia to receive their diploma cover and a commemorative program. Graduates who cannot attend the ceremony in person will be able to participate by viewing the livestream and engaging in a virtual component.
Details are being finalized and will be communicated in the coming weeks. Please continue to check the this webpage for additional information.
Commencement is a ceremony that represents an important milestone of degree completion that you have achieved, and we want to see you celebrate it! Graduates are encouraged to display their excitement by decorating their vehicles as you would your cap.
We look forward to celebrating your accomplishments.

Dear Class of 2020 Seawolves,
We hope this message finds you in a healthy and safe place. You, as the Class of 2020, have faced unique challenges unlike any other: an unwavering pandemic that not only affected your Commencement ceremony, but surely has affected your lives after graduation as you look to make a mark on the world. We wish to say how extremely proud we are of you and all that you accomplished at Sonoma State University.
In May of this year, SSU, like many universities across the country, made the difficult decision to postpone our Commencement ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We were unequivocal in our intention to postpone - but not cancel your Commencement — as we understand the importance of being able to celebrate this important achievement with your family and friends.
We are pleased to say that the Commencement ceremony for the Class of 2020 is being planned for the weekend of May 15-16, 2021. We are still exploring different options for how the ceremony will be conducted, including virtually, a physically distanced in-person gathering, or drive-through celebration to protect the safety of all those who would be in attendance.
We understand that for some, attending Commencement will be a challenge as many of you have moved out of the area and some quite far away. We apologize that we cannot give more concrete details at this time regarding the ceremony logistics, but we are closely monitoring local and state guidelines in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic so we can create a memorable Commencement ceremony that is safe for everyone who can attend. Please assist us in the Commencement planning efforts by completing a short survey.
We will be in contact with you again in February of 2021 as we consider specific guidance from our local health officials so that we can provide you better details regarding Commencement logistics. In the meantime, we encourage you to stay connected with your Sonoma State Alumni Association. There, you will find a caring alumni community as well as information and resources to support you. Until then, may you continue to follow the path that your SSU journey prepared you to take.
You were eligible to participate in Commencement 2020 if you:
- Graduated in Fall 2019
- Applied for graduation in Spring 2020
- Applied for graduation in Summer 2020
