2021 Ceremony Information & Updates

February 11, 2021

Dear Class of 2021,

Save the date! We are pleased to announce that Sonoma State University will celebrate the graduates of the Class of 2021 with a hybrid drive-thru and virtual commencement ceremony on campus the weekend of May 22-23, 2021.

After careful consideration of current public health guidance, the Commencement Logistics Committee thinks the best format for this important celebration is a hybrid drive-thru ceremony. While current Sonoma County public health data indicates that large in-person gatherings such as commencement will not yet be feasible by May, a hybrid drive-thru format provides more of a community feel than a solely virtual format.

Despite the continued challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, SSU has been steadfast in our commitment to honor our 2021 graduates with a commencement ceremony that is both festive and safe. We aim to make this event a meaningful memory for you, your family, and your friends.

Each graduate will have the option to attend in person in a vehicle accompanied by family and friends. Graduates participating in the drive-thru ceremony will have the opportunity to exit their car to walk across the stage wearing regalia to receive their diploma cover and a commemorative program. Graduates who cannot attend the ceremony in person will be able to participate by viewing the livestream and engaging in a virtual component.

Details are being finalized and will be communicated in the coming weeks. Please continue to check the this webpage for additional information.
Commencement is a ceremony that represents an important milestone of degree completion that you have achieved, and we want to see you celebrate it! Graduates are encouraged to display their excitement by decorating their vehicles as you would your cap.

We look forward to celebrating your accomplishments.

Dear Class of 2021 Seawolves,

We hope this message finds you in a healthy and safe place. We are extremely proud of your accomplishments and all that you have achieved at Sonoma State University. You as the Class of 2021 have faced the challenge of completing your studies in the midst of an unwavering pandemic and another year of destructive wildfires. Yet you are meeting those challenges with the kind of spirit and determination to persevere and realize your ultimate goal — graduation.

We are pleased to say that the Commencement ceremony for the Class of 2021 is being planned for the weekend of May 22-23, 2021. We are still exploring different options for how the ceremony will be conducted, including virtually, a physically distanced in-person gathering, or drive-through celebration.

We understand that for some, attending Commencement will be a challenge as some of you have moved back home or are currently in different states. We apologize that we cannot give more concrete details as to how the ceremony will be held, but we will be closely monitoring local and state guidelines regarding the COVID-19 pandemic so we can create a memorable Commencement ceremony that is safe for everyone who can attend. Please assist us in the Commencement planning efforts by completing a short survey.

We will be in contact with you again in February of 2021 as we consider specific guidance from our local health officials so that we can provide you better details regarding Commencement logistics. May you continue to stay safe and well.

Apply to Graduate

Commencement is a ceremony to honor our annual graduates but please keep in mind that participation is optional and is not the same as actually graduating from SSU. You will officially graduate after grades have been finalized and only if all degree requirements were completed by the end of the semester you applied to graduate in. Get more information on how to apply to graduate from the Office of the Registrar.

The Academic Requirements Report (ARR) determines a student's graduation eligibility and the current ‘graduation status’ is listed at the top left corner of the ARR.

If you have not met all degree requirements by your planned graduation date, you must reschedule your graduation date by submitting the Graduation Postponement Form online. If you have questions or concerns about your graduation status, please contact your graduation team specialist in the Office of the Registrar
